Bromborough’s Paul Waring held off a field packed with the world’s leading players to win the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. At one point in the round his near neighbour Matt Jordan was tied for second after a start that included 6 birdies in his first seven holes. His birdie fest dried up, however, and Waring and several other contenders embarked on a day of blistering scores, with Paul making the decisive birdie on the 17th. To avoid any doubt over the result, he also birdied the 18th after a majestic second shot, to claim the title and a huge boost to his Race to Dubai ranking.
Paul established himself as a highly promising junior with Cheshire and England, winning the 2001 English Under 16s Strokeplay Championship (McGregor Trophy). He was also successful in the Cheshire Boys Championship in 2002.
In 2002 Paul was selected for the GB&I Boys team to contest the Jacques Léglise Trophy. In 2003 he had the honour of captaining the GB&I team which beat Europe convincingly at Lahinch.
He came to national prominence in 2005 when he won the English Amateur Championship on his home course at Bromborough. The event was notable for the fact that he not only beat a fellow Cheshire and Wirral colleague in Steve Capper in the final, but that the English Golf Union President was Heswall’s Fred Caroe. Quite a day for Bromborough, Cheshire and the Wirral.
Paul turned professional in 2007, and quickly secured his European Tour card. It was exactly 200 events, however, until he secured his first, and very popular, victory in the Nordea Master of 2018. His win in Abu Dhabi catapults him to 5th on the Race to Dubai rankings, and whatever happens in the grand finale this week, Paul is assured of comfortably his highest year-end ranking in his career and possibly an automatic PGA Tour card for 2025. Not bad at the ripe old age of 39!
