Men win in Cumbria to open league season

Having come close to winning the Northern Counties League in the last 2 years, Cheshire travelled to Workington to take on Cumbria in this season’s opener. Brilliant weather can’t be guaranteed in Cumbria but this was a glorious day for golf.

Our last away encounter against Cumbria was also at Workington in 2023, and that match went to the final hole, Cheshire winning by the narrowest margin. We selected a very strong team including England international Dan Hayes and Josh McMahon, past Lytham Trophy winner and recently returned to the amateur ranks after a spell as a professional.

Dan and Josh McMahon were paired together in the top foursome, but they were beaten by Cumbria stalwart Will Bowe, a Workington member, and Will Coxon.

The morning foursomes were shared 3 a piece. Cheshire got halves out of the first two singles, but had a run of four straight wins in the middle order that was backed up by wins from Jack Nicholson and Josh Sims, plus another half point from our ‘half-specialist’ Remy Miller. Cheshire won by 10.5 to 7.5

Other results this weekend saw a thriller at Hesketh where Lancashire led Yorkshire 4.5 to 1.5 at lunch. A battle royal ensued with the last match all square coming to the 18th. Yorkshire managed to clinch that game and the match.

Durham took on Northumberland and this match also produced a nail-biting finish, going to the last match on the 18th hole. Durham ran out the winners, 10-8.

Our next match is at Ringway against Northumberland on June 15th. Spectators very welcome. Do come along, the standard of golf in the Northern Counties League improves every year – you’ll not be disappointed!
