Wallasey awaits Four Counties Boys

The Four Counties Junior Tournament came about in 1973 when Cheshire, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and Shropshire & Herefordshire instigated an early-season round-robin tournament for under-18 boys.
The inaugural event was held at Crewe Golf Club and was won by Lancashire. Probably of far greater significance was that two of the Shropshire & Herefordshire team went on to become Major champions, namely Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam.

Other notable players who have competed include Tommy Fleetwood, Ashley Chesters, Lee Westwood, Matt Jordan and Paul Waring,
This annual event is always keenly anticipated by the teams, as it gets them together at the start of the season for some very competitive golf.
The format is teams of 7 under-18 boys competing in singles matchplay in a round-robin format. Teams get 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. In the event of a tie the number of individual game points is taken onto account. If there is still a tie, each team nominate one player to take part in a sudden-death play off. This happened some years ago and Tommy Fleetwood was nominated by Lancashire. Unfortunately his dad had by then set off for home with Tommy’s clubs, so he had to borrow some! He still won it for the Red Rose county.

The winning Cheshire team at Formby, 2024

Cheshire prevailed in the 2024 event at Formby and we have a very strong team for this year’s renewal:

Aaron Mohun (Delamere Forest)
Laurent Beech (Eaton)
Ben Buchanan (Dunham Forest)
Lucas Kuiper (Stockport)
Maxi Moore (Sandiway)
Spencer Davies (Wallasey)
Cole Self (Ringway)
Harry Kell (Sandiway)

Cheshire are hosting this year and are delighted to be playing at the wonderful and historic Wallasey Golf Club. This will be a tremendous experience for all players and we are sure they will enjoy the experience immensely. We are very appreciative of Wallasey’s hospitality and we know they will be tremendous hosts.

The event is on 16th and 17th April. Spectators are very welcome. Who knows, you may see a future Major champion in action!
