Oscar Bravo! The 100th Men's County Championship, back where it all began at the wonderful Delamere Forest GC, produced a close finish With an event toasted by record temperatures, it was decided to reduce the championship to 54 holes to avoid players facing the punishment of 36 holes on Saturday Oscar Doran led by 2 going into the final round with a few prominent county players in close pursuit. It was another Oscar, Craig (Sandiway) who stormed to a tremendous four-under 68 leaving Doran needing to eagle the last hole to tie. He took six leaving Oscar Craig the winner. Sandiway retained their team title, Paul McFerran won the over 35s prize and Oscar Doran took the leading qualifier prize. Huge thanks to Delamere Forest who were brilliant hosts as always and produced a pristine course which was a real challenge to the 105 competitors in unrelenting heat. One of the big aims for Cheshire Golf President Marjorie Griffiths and the committee is to get more girls and ladies into golf through ‘Get into Golf‘ programmes for ladies and girls. Hazel Grove Golf club has been working hard for the past few years on the ‘Get Into Golf’ programme with current Lady Vice Captain Janet Metters at the heart of the development. Janet has a terrific example of the success of the scheme through Alex White (Pictured). Janet outlined Alex’s path to golfing success: “Alex had never picked up a club four years ago before being enticed, with her sister to join Hazel Grove’s ‘Get Into Golf’ programme at a club where her mum was already a member and a keen golfer. “A keen sportswoman, Alex was struggling to find a substitute for her running hobby having damaged her knee. She was hooked from the start despite, as many do, thinking golf was just for the elderly and retired! “She started with a high handicap but with regular practice and lessons saw improvement week on week. “Her HI crashed each year and she started to win the occasional weekly women’s competitions with great success coming in 2025 when she won two major events in the womens section. “That wasn’t the end, this year, despite a vastly reduced HI now at 24 she won the major Saturday club competition against a full field getting her name on the club honours board. “From novice to honours in 4 years! We are so proud of her and such a good role model for getting ladies and girls into golf.” *If your home club has news of people development or success please submit a story to communications@cheshiregolf.org.uk and we'll do our best to help inspire others.
