Romiley host Golf Sixes

Romiley Golf Club were superb hosts for the opening fixture of the Golf Sixes League, Stockport.
Melissa Clapham, the Romiley organiser, explained what the league is about and how successful it has become introducing new youngsters into golf.
Melissa said: “Golf Sixes is a fun team-based golf tournament created in 2017.
“The aim is to introduce young golfers to play the game of golf, and get to play on other golf courses as beginners in fun competitions.
“The format consists of children playing six holes in pairs, using Texas Scramble format accumulating points for their team of six.
“The ages involved are ideally from seven to fourteen, aimed at children with no handicap, or if they have one it must be 42 or above.
“Golf Sixes is hopefully a stepping stone from having golf lessons on a practice area, or driving range, to actually being on a course.
“The six holes play on a a shortened course in length to approximately 150 yards.
“Each club in the league hosts two matches each over the season from May to September.
“It has an on-going league table which eventually shows the winning club at the end of the season.
“Our league is called Golf Sixes league – Stockport Cheshire, and the clubs involved are Romiley who have two teams, one of ten juniors who played for RGC Golf Sixes last year, and a second team of eleven juniors who are new to golf and have not played in the league before.
“The other clubs involved have one team each and these clubs are: New Mills, Marple, Stockport, and joining for the first time Disley.
“All these clubs took part in the opening fixture and the results on the day were- Romiley’s A team came first from New Mills, Marple, Stockport, Disley and Romiley B.
“The next round is being hosted at New Mills Golf Club.
“I would like to give a big thank you to all of the Team managers/ junior organisers from each club and the juniors parents, for their help too , and lastly the Golf Foundation who run these leagues nationally.”
