One of the big aims for Cheshire Golf President Marjorie Griffiths and the committee is to get more girls and ladies into golf through ‘Get into Golf‘ programmes for ladies and girls. Hazel Grove Golf club has been working hard for the past few years on the ‘Get Into Golf’ programme with current Lady Vice Captain Janet Metters at the heart of the development. Janet has a terrific example of the success of the scheme through Alex White (Pictured). Janet outlined Alex’s path to golfing success: “Alex had never picked up a club four years ago before being enticed, with her sister to join Hazel Grove’s ‘Get Into Golf’ programme at a club where her mum was already a member and a keen golfer. “A keen sportswoman, Alex was struggling to find a substitute for her running hobby having damaged her knee. She was hooked from the start despite, as many do, thinking golf was just for the elderly and retired! “She started with a high handicap but with regular practice and lessons saw improvement week on week. “Her HI crashed each year and she started to win the occasional weekly women’s competitions with great success coming in 2025 when she won two major events in the womens section. “That wasn’t the end, this year, despite a vastly reduced HI now at 24 she won the major Saturday club competition against a full field getting her name on the club honours board. “From novice to honours in 4 years! We are so proud of her and such a good role model for getting ladies and girls into golf.” *If your home club has news of people development or success please submit a story to communications@cheshiregolf.org.uk and we'll do our best to help inspire others.
